Many tools, usually high-speed-steel or carbide, can have their performance improved by coating their surface with a thin layer of material that is very hard and resistant to wear, or possessing a low co-efficient of friction. Commonly used materials are aluminum oxide, titanium carbide, titanium nitride, hafnium nitride or some combination of these elements. Diamond coatings are usually used to improve performance when machining modern composite materials. |
