Different Types Of Wood Router Bits

Wood router bits are often the most versatile tools that woodworkers have in their shops these days. With upcut wood router bits, you can do three dimensional routing and carving. There are types of wood router bits for forming edges, milling stock for joints, enhancing furniture with decorative inlays, or even making raised panel doors. There are virtually unlimited uses for wood router bits.

In order to use upcut wood router bits and other types of router bits successfully, you must have a lot of practice. Choosing the right wood router bits, however, is equally as important. The materials that wood router bits are made from plays a huge role in the life and performance of the bits, as well.

Wood Router bits are available in the following materials:

High-Speed Steel – These are relatively inexpensive, and they are good for general routing in soft wood and light plastics.

Carbide-Tipped – These wood router bits are more expensive than high speed steel, but they stay sharp for longer and are more appropriate for hard wood and other dense materials.

Solid Carbide – These are normally the most expensive of upcut wood router bits and other router bits, and they are typically smaller and meant for specific jobs like mortising, laminate trimming and pattern cutting.
